With the launch of the NES Mini by Nintendo, many of us have awakened something inside. It’s been 34 years since the original NES was released, and since then, a lot has changed the video game industry. Year after year the big companies have been improving their consoles and the quality of their games. New creators have joined the industry and, also, great pillars have fallen, leaving a great void in our hearts. At present it is Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo that lead the market but what about all the consoles that were left behind?
Time passes … and games make history
I will never forget the face that was left on you when you died in the last level of Super Mario Bros and you had to start the game again… Now that was difficult. Nowadays, hyper-realistic graphics are carried on hyper-powerful consoles or computers, but what has happened to the video games of a lifetime? Many years have passed since the first consoles came out. Some of you will remember, others were not even born. But there is something that cannot be denied and that is that those games had a special halo.
The classics are back
Nostalgia. That is what many of us feel if we think of the afternoons we spend in front of those fat televisions taking our first steps into the world of video games. If I say things like Atari 2600, Super Nintendo, Mega Drive or Game boy, many of you will get goose bumps. But let’s not forget those who have not met them. Whoever you are, today you are in luck because if you keep reading you will be able to enjoy more than 20 consoles that marked an era.
I want to play. What do I do?
Nothing is simpler than installing RetroArch, a program that will allow us to enjoy all the classics on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, PlayStation 3, Ps Vita, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, GameCube and 3DS. This is possible thanks to emulators. To do this we will only have to download the program, choose the console we want to play and run in our underwear killing zombies.
Wait, what is an emulator?
Emulators are programs that allow us to run video games or other programs on devices for which they were not intended. In this case we will run games from a certain console on a computer or other consoles.
Consoles that RetroArch emulates
- PC Engine
- Neo-Geo Pocket
- Virtual boy
- Atari 2600
- Atari Lynx
- Game boy
- Game Boy Color
- Game Boy Advance
- Sega Systems (Master, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear)
- Arcade MAME
- Nintendo DS
- Cave story
- Nintendo 64
- Sega saturn
Is this legal?
Downloading and using RetroArch or any other emulator is legal but… What about games? This goes like movies or anything else protected by copyright laws. If you have a physical copy of the game, go ahead, you can download it without breaking the law. In the case of not having it, sorry friend, it is illegal and that is why I will not tell you where to find it (surely in less than a minute you will find it in google 😉).
Thanks to this emulator you will be able to relive those special moments that you longed for so much but could not repeat because your old console stopped working or, if you never had the opportunity, live them for the first time. Because working is very good but we all need a moment of calm. Now you have no excuse, say goodbye to boredom and let your inner child out.
